A business group led by Grupo RAS is advancing plans to build a multipurpose terminal specialized in hydrogen and renewable fuels at the Port of Montevideo, aiming to position Montevideo as a regional logistics hub for liquid fuels, amid the expansion of hydrogen-related energy projects in Uruguay. The initiative, submitted to the Ministry of Environment to obtain environmental location approval, involves an estimated investment of around US$100 million and includes the construction of a new berth and a tank farm with approximately 40,000 m³ of storage capacity, covering an area of 15,500 sqm near Berth C. In its initial stage, the terminal will focus on the reception, storage, transshipment, and dispatch of conventional fuels, biofuels, HVO or green diesel, and vegetable oils, with an estimated throughput of 480,000 m³ annually, using large tankers to supply domestic and regional markets. The project also includes direct and indirect job creation and, according to the preliminary assessment submitted, is not expected to generate significant environmental impacts, supporting a simplified environmental classification.
