Neltume Ports Proposes US$900 Million Investment in Container Terminal in Montevideo – Montevideo | 09/09/26
Neltume Ports, Montecon’s majority shareholder, submitted a private initiative to Uruguay’s Executive Branch to develop a new specialized container terminal at the Port of Montevideo, called Montevideo Container Terminal, with an estimated investment of US$900 million. The project would have capacity to handle up to 1.15 million TEU annually, with 940 meters of berthing line capable of accommodating two post-Panamax vessels simultaneously, a specialized berth for barge transshipment cargo, approximately 38 hectares of operational space and independent access points. If approved, the company estimates that construction would generate around 1,800 jobs and says it would represent the largest private port investment proposed in Uruguay. According to Neltume Ports, the initiative seeks to expand the port’s capacity to accommodate foreign trade growth, improve its competitiveness, attract new international shipping lines and increase connectivity with major global markets. The company believes the new infrastructure could turn Montevideo into a key hub for Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay, positioning it at the center of the region’s international trade. Company representatives had previously informed President Yamandú Orsi and other authorities of their intention to invest in a specialized terminal that would compete with the one operated by Katoen Natie. The proposal also comes after the Executive Branch signed an agreement to close the international arbitration that Neltume Ports had initiated against the state before the World Bank’s ICSID.
